Marketing

I've worked full time in marketing since 2015, starting off with a contracting role at FireEye, then going in-house with BrightEdge (Creative Content Consultant), DataStax (Editorial Director), Tuya Smart (Senior Content Strategist), and Volt Active Data (Head of Content). I've also worked on a freelance and/or contracting basis for Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Salesforce, Pure Storage, Mixpanel, and many others. I've ghost-written top-performing third-party pieces like this one for Forbes (currently top-ranked for "cost of downtime" in Google Search) and blogs like this one for Salesforce (the company's top-performing blog for 2023), scaled content engines from the ground up, and helped accelerate companies into profitability through their marketing voice and the crafting of specific, well thought-out, ICP-targeting customer journeys involving the range of content (videos, blogs, white papers, podcasts, social, etc...).

Journalism

Right out of college I worked as a newspaper journalist for many years, focusing on city government and environmental issues. I've also done really fun pieces like this one for Hyundai, published in Smithsonian Magazine, and this one about middle-aged skateboarders published in San Francisco Chronicle Magazine. I've also worked as a business journalist and medical writer. I'm proud to say that in 20+ years of employment (between journalism and tech), including both contracting and in-house roles, my average stint is more than 4 years.

Screenwriting

It's hard to capture my screenwriting experience in a single paragraph, but if I had to encapsulate it, I'd say—"wild, fun, and way harder than I could have ever imagined." I've done paid writing assignments for Hollywood producers, optioned many features and TV pilots, pitched pilots in person to TV networks, had major Hollywood directors and actors attached to projects, and placed as a finalist in many large screenwriting competitions. I also have an LA-based manager. The only thing I haven't yet done in screenwriting is by far the hardest thing there is to do—get one of my scripts made, and that might actually happen soon via the feature comedy I currently have under option to and in development with 3PaS Studios.

"Mark is an extremely talented writer with a gift for creating real characters on the page and for quick dialogue that makes it hard to put his scripts down. He's also good with notes—knows when to push back and when to go with the feedback. Overall -- a great writer to work with and valuable asset to any project!"
